I thought I'd do an introduction post about me before I begin working on my blog entries for EDEL1010. I have been married to Brad Emery for 8 years, I'm a stay-at-home mom of 3 girls, and I have 2 dogs that we rescued from an animal shelter. I have lived in Utah my whole life, and have only ever lived in 2 houses. I have one sister and two brothers, and I am the baby of the family. I am the Vice President of our PTA this year, and this will be my 3rd year being involved with them. I am very excited about the activities that we have planned for the faculty, students and families this year.
I absolutely love to learn. I loved school, and I'm excited and nervous to start back up again. I've loved reading ever since my 4th grade teacher, Mr. Hatch. He was our neighbor down the street, and I played with his daughters often. He would allow us to read any book on his reading list, and we weren't required to read something that we had no interest in. I remember that he would read out loud to the class, and my favorite part was when he would use different voices for each character. When he would read to us, I felt like it was more than a book; I could see the descriptions and characters in my mind like a movie. Since then, I've read many books with his same philosophy-give the characters a voice, and make the story come to life. I read Charlotte's Web to my oldest daughter last summer, and she (along with my other two girls and husband) would giggle when I would change my voice for each character. She would ask me to read it for hours, and she never wanted to stop. I really hope that she will continue to love reading, because it's a wonderful skill to have.
I love volunteering in the classroom at our elementary school, and helping any way that I can. Last year, I volunteered during the week twice a month, and graded homework every Friday. I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what teachers do on a regular basis, but it will be so neat to have the freedom to help in other ways in the classroom. With parent volunteering, I was only there while the kids did centers in the morning, and then left at about 10:30. It will be fun to learn how they work throughout the rest of the day, and be able to help them in any way that I can.
I'm excited to be working on my bachelor's in education again after an 8 year break, and I hope that I can retain all the information provided to become the best teacher that I can be.
